- Controlling Sulfate Scaling
In RO Systems
-
- Controlling sulfate scaling in reverse osmosis
membranes is critical to the longevity of the membrane elements
and successful operation of the RO system. Historically, membrane
elements with barium sulfate, strontium sulfate or calcium sulfate
were unable to be cleaned requiring costly membrane replacement.
In recent years, great strides have been made both in controlling
and cleaning sulfate scaling.
- Controlling sulfate scales is more difficult
than controlling calcium carbonate scaling. Simple pH adjustment
through the addition of acid into the feed water to the RO was
fairly successful at controlling calcium carbonate scale. The
primary acid used for pH adjustment is sulfuric acid, which increases
the level of sulfates in the feed water, which in turn increases
the scaling potential for sulfate scales. Increased recovery
requirements for RO systems intensified the scaling potential
even more. It became evident that successful operation of RO
systems at higher recoveries would require chemicals designed
to inhibit various types of scaling and fouling. With proper
dosing, a well-engineered scale inhibitor can successfully control
scaling and fouling.
- Once that it had precipitated out of solution,
sulfate scale was impossible to clean out of the membrane. High
pH cleanings had no affect and low pH cleanings were equally
unsuccessful. The fact that the sulfate scale would not dissolve
or go back into solution, made cleaning the membranes a fruitless
task. Membrane replacement was inevitable. In recent years, new
membrane cleaning formulations have been developed that combine
organic acids with specific dispersants which has the ability
to soften the sulfate scale enough to allow the flow of the cleaning
solution to remove the scale as a semi-solid material which will
trap in the cleaning skid filters.
- For the greatest success in controlling sulfate
scaling in an RO system, it is necessary to implement the use
of a quality scale inhibitor, formulated for reverse osmosis
systems and engineered for control of high levels of sulfate
scales. Additionally, a new generation membrane cleaner with
the ability to remove sulfate scale should be used for the low
pH cleanings. It is always advisable to follow a low pH cleaning
with a high pH cleaning using a cleaner formulated for use in
RO systems.
